Teaching Statistics in Higher Education

View comments of past participants

We offer a range of prospects for studying how to teach statistics at Higher Education (HE) level. These take the form of distance learning courses and materials, and are run by The Higher Education Academy Maths, Stats and OR Network, in association with The Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education.

In the first of these prospects, individuals study externally for a Certificate in Teaching Statistics in HE. This is awarded by the Royal Statistical Society. Alternatively, individuals can study the materials through their staff development units, possibly as part of a PgCert/Diploma in Learning and Teaching. The course is well suited for staff induction courses. A third prospect is for the course materials to be used on a self-study basis.

Click on the links below to find out about each of these.

  1. The Certificate in Teaching Statistics in Higher Education

  2. Statistics Teaching in Higher Education Induction Programmes

  3. Resources for personal development: Improving your Skills as a Statistics Teacher

  4. Statistics Teaching in Higher Education: Professional Development Programmes

You can track the development of the course in the following series of articles which appeared in the MSOR Connections Newsletter:

An overview of Teaching Statistics Teaching in Higher Education is available in an article which appeared in the November 2003 issue of RSS NEWS. A detailed PowerPoint presentation of the course, made at the RSS2004 conference in Manchester, can be found here: A Course in Learning how to Teach Statistics in HE.
