New Masters Qualification in Teaching at Pre-University Level

MA in Teaching Pre-university Mathematics and Statistics

The Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education (RSSCSE), Plymouth University and Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) have developed new Masters level degree pathways. They have just been validated by Plymouth University and the first cohort of students will start in September 2012.

The basic structure of the Masters degree involves teachers studying any two of the following three 60-credit pathways:

  • MEI’s ‘Teaching Advanced Mathematics’ (TAM) course [credit will be transferred from the other universities offering the course]
  • MEI’s ‘Teaching Further Mathematics’ course (TFM)
  • A Masters-level version of the RSSCSE’s ‘Certificate in Teaching Statistics’ course (CTS) 60 credits are sufficient to gain a Post Graduate Certificate (PGC); and 120 credits constitute a PG Diploma (PGD). Teachers can then also submit a dissertation to the university, which will make up the remaining third of the degree (60 credits), leading to the award of MA: Education (Teaching pre-university mathematics and statistics).

Teachers who have already completed TAM, TFM or CTS may qualify for some exemptions.

This is the first Masters degree of its kind in the UK that caters for teaching at pre-university level and is (possibly) the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

Further details, including the fee structure and application forms, will appear on the RSSCSE and Plymouth University websites in the next few weeks. In the meantime, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
