Using
Statistics in Your Project
This booklet is designed to help you to carry out a GCSE project which
involves the use of statistics, although much of what it says applies
to anybody, anywhere carrying out a statistical project. It
takes the form of a series of questions which you should be asking
yourself before you begin the project and makes some suggestions about
how you could set about answering them. It works through
a few very different projects to show you some ideas for possible
areas which you might like to work on.

Statistical
Needs of Non-Specialist Young Workers
The Statistical Education Project 16-19 was set up in 1981
and one of the concerns of the project was to find out the nature
of statistical ideas and techniques being used by young people as
they enter employment at the age of 18 or so, following full-time
education. The interest was in the needs of the general employee
on entering and becoming established within the company.

Co-operation to Co-ordination
This handbook can be used in several ways. Firstly it
is a practical resource for all teachers who are seeking to
encourage greater co-operation and co-ordination of statistics teaching
within their schools. It has been published in loose-leaf binder
form so that teachers can add their own material as they work within
their schools. An appendix includes photocopiable pages which
you can use within your school to help gather information. You

The
Statistician at Work
These two tapes were first prepared as background material
for the Open University course M345: Statistical Methods. They
do, though, have a much wider appeal than this. They were devised
to show the wide range of work that a statistician might be called
upon to do. By letting some of today's leading statisticians
speak for themselves you will be able to get an insight into how they
think and work, how they co-operate and interact with colleagues and
how they set about solving problems and communicating the solutions.

Handling Data
with Spreadsheets and Databases in Geography, and Science
Four separate books for use at an in-service course for teachers
at key stage 3 and 4. Teachers try out various activities
and are then asked to discuss the value of these activities and
to think through the issues associated with handling data using
spreadsheets and databases. The course aims to:
(a) give teachers experience of handling data using spreadsheets
and databases;
(b) make teachers aware of these programmes in teaching data handling;
(c) help teachers decide how they can best use databases and spreadsheets
in their particular teaching situation.
